  • American Imperialism in the Pegasus galaxy

I enjoyed the show to begin with. The stories were interesting but as the show progressed it became clear the Atlantis expedition and by extension the SGC and the governments of Earth are incredibly hypocritical. They whinge, whine when advanced civilisations refuse to provide them with advanced technologies and plot to get advanced technologies to defend themselves. They then refuse to extend that courtesy to those civilisations less advanced than themselves. The Atlantis expedition including the SGC routinely sermonise on the benefits of transparency re the Stargate to other civilisations but refuse to extend that courtesy to their own planet. The motivation for refusing to disclose such information is always couched in terms of serving the greater good and the populations, cultures are incapable of handling the change to their reality but guess what, the SGC and the Atlantis expedition are eminently qualified to handle the stresses of the new reality. Leave it to them folks, they will take care of everything. The show sells itself on the notion that the Atlantis expedition is solely qualified to understand and operate the technology on Atlantis. The Atlantis expedition is self righteous in its judgement of atrocities committed by other civilisations they encounter but think nothing of committing genocide themselves on the grounds that their actions always seek to serve the greater good. So my question is: why should I root for these people who operate from a policy of serving themselves, employ double standards and are hypocritical? It’s no wonder the show was cancelled. Do I miss it? God no. We don’t need another TV show promoting imperialism, American or otherwise. Don’t kid yourself by believing otherwise, this show is racist.

Deep Apace 9 was the worst Star Trek. Atlantis makes the same mistakes. Too much personal baggage and not enough sci-fi I

A worthy successor to original SG1 series. Takes a bit to establish itself but great to watch
  • Greedy iTunes?

    By John-Malc
I was about to buy this and also the complete SG-1 but Atlantis has just gone up in price overnight to £54.99 (from £39.99) and SG-1 even more. The complete sets had only been on a few days and I'm sorry but iTunes needs to realise not everyone can afford such increases on fixed incomes. Oh well, there's always Amazon. Update: perhaps it's the distributors and not iTunes - all series were on sale at the other place mentioned for £6.99 so I bought Series 1. Today (Feb 23rd) all series have gone up to £19.99, a three-fold increase. So someone's being greedy in these prices for an old series and I'll carefully consider whether I buy any more series from anyone. Entertainment-wise worth 3 or 4 stars but pricing strategy brings this down.
