This is the saga of Intergalactic warrior Paul Atreides and his messianic rise to lead his people and their struggle for survival. A classic with a fantastically deep story line.
  • An exceptional piece of science fiction writing...

...whose brilliance is completely hidden by an appalling script, poor acting and complete disregard for cohesive storytelling . I knew I’d made a mistake in buying this tosh two minutes into film, when the opening narrative by the Princess Irulan had revealed the vast majority of the mechanisms supporting the plot and had risen to a blathering crescendo of naffness with ‘oh yes, I forgot to tell you the spice only exists on one planet in the entire universe...’. (I physically cringed at this point, and - I imagine - Frank Herbert turned in his grave one more time). Sorry, couldn’t watch this; retreated back to listening to the unabridged, and un-butchered audio book version. That might suffer from a few slightly dodgy accents courtesy of the narrator, but it’s at least its enjoyable, evolves the characters and the plot, and tells a story. This film version just dumps all the bits on the mat and then uses the plot to kick them around to make a vaguely-space-opera-shaped, second rate, action film. If only Apple’s refund people policy allowed me to get my money back: “I’ve only chewed the end; look, the rest of the film still has the paper on”. Massive fan of this serious of books and the writers work in general. Of this version of the film; not so much.

This film is a gem of its age and in some ways timeless. It has such rich storylines and side plots in it that watching it ten times isn’t enough. The musical score is stunning try playing it loud.

Fabulous film, famous flop, famous faces, flamboyant futuristic fantastic fray. Apparently Herbert visited the set during filming and declared "This is exactly how I visualised it". Could be apocryphal. You'll either love it or hate it. For me it is a classic cult film. Unique in atmosphere and adventure. Wonderful. LONG LIVE THE FIGHTERS.
  • My favourite sc-fi movie of all time.

You will either love it or hate it. It's one of those movies requires you to pay attention and think beyond the typical all action shooters which you see today. There are 2 versions, this is the original cut which is the best version. They also re released a longer version with additional audio to explain what is going on but it's generally considered a poor alternative.

It’s hard to do justice to Dino De Laurentis’ version of Frank Herbert’s Dune in the form of an iTunes review, so I won’t even try. But I will say this, if you haven’t seen it before and you’re into sci-fi, space, and huge plot lines, then my advice would be to buy or rent it right here, right now. Herbert was a genius.

Been doing a monthly search for Dune for years now willing it to become available and now it is. Great film that I have missed so very much and will enjoy watching many times.
